Cargo Restraint Limitations in Pickup Truck Cargo Bays
Pickup trucks are widely used to transport equipment, tools, recreational gear and storage containers etc. To secure cargo during transport, most pickup trucks are equipped with rail and cleat systems mounted along the inner sidewalls of the cargo bay.
While these systems are effective for restraining taller loads, they have an inherent limitation; cargo positioned below the tie-down point height cannot be effectively secured using tie-down straps. This assessment is based on the Owner's direct experience and evaluation of standard factory-fitted rail and cleat systems.
This creates a gap in cargo restraint capability across a significant portion of the cargo bay.
Low-Height Cargo Movement
Many commonly transported items sit below the height of rail and cleat tie-down points, including:
- Equipment and storage cases.
- Toolboxes and power tool cases.
- Ice coolers and portable camp fridge/freezers.
- Recreational gear.
- Travel bags and cases.
- Cargo boxes, crates and storage containers.
Because these low-height items cannot be effectively tied down using conventional rail and cleat tie-down systems, they are often left partially or completely unsecured.
During normal vehicle operation, these items may shift or slide within the cargo bay.
Risks of Unrestrained Cargo
Cargo movement can lead to several issues, including:
- Damage to cargo and vehicle cargo bays.
- Reduced load stability during transport.
- Increased risk during hard braking, acceleration, cornering or sudden stops.
- Potential safety hazards if objects become projectiles in a collision or impact event.
Despite advances in pickup truck cargo management systems, effective restraint of low-height cargo remains a largely unresolved challenge.
A New Approach to Cargo Restraint
The ASTRA™ Suspended Tiedown System was developed to address this limitation by enabling cargo to be secured using a suspended tie-down configuration that applies both vertical and horizontal tensions.
This approach expands cargo restraint capability and allows low-height loads to be properly contained and stabilised within pickup truck cargo bays.
